BERRY Family, Hiram (Eli) and Sarah Berry. We know that our gg grandfather John Nicholson lived in Murray county and met (probably married) Martha Malinda Berry there. Other than the fact that her father, Hiram, applied for and was granted land in the lottery, qfter his death, Sarah (his widow) applied for his grant and received it, we have no information concerning the Berry family. I have been sent a census record of Elias Berry (must be connected) who had two females in his household named Tamer, John and Malinda Berry Nicholson later named a daughter Tamer Jane. Before moving to Missouri, John Nicholson and another son in law gave notarized permission for Sarah to sell or do whatever she wished with the land which she had received for her and her children. Any help with either Nicholson or Berry would be greatly appreciated.

CAIN Family, Green Washington Cain [b. March 13, 1816 in Jackson County, Georgia---d. May 18, 1886 in Spring Place], my great, great uncle, and his wife, Nancy [Boyd] Cain [b. 1820 in South Carolina---d. February of 1895 in Spring Place], moved from Forsyth County, Georgia to Murray County between the taking of the 1850 and 1860 Censuses. Green and Nancy had thirteen children, seven of which I have information concerning their martial status and etc. The remaining six, I have very little, if any, information on, and as such, I have ran upon a brick wall. I have the following information on these six children.
William F. Cain b. 1843 in Forsyth County, Georgia. Note: In the Georgia Room of the Central Library in Marietta, Georgia, they had several books on Civil War Enlistment. In one of these books I found a William F. Cain, who enlisted into the Confederate Army as a Private on September 19, 1861. He was attached to Co. E, 60th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Evans Brigade, Gordon's Division, Army of Northern Virginia. This is the Confederate unit that William F.'s eldest brother, Joseph Harland Cain, was attached to. These two William F.'s could be one and the same.
James C. Cain b. 1845 in Forsyth County, Georgia. Note: In the Georgia Room of the Central Library in Marietta, Georgia, they had several books on Civil War Enlistment. In one of these books I found a James C. Cain, who enlisted into the Confederate Army as a Private on March 1, 1863. He was attached to Co. E, 60th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Evans Brigade, Gordon's Division, Army of Northern Virginia. This is the Confederate unit that James C.'s eldest brother, Joseph Harland Cain, was attached to. These two James C.'s could be one and the same.

Stephen Goodson CARTER, my granddad, was born in Ashville, NC on Aug. 14, 1837 and migrated to Spring Place, Murray Co, GA in 1846, according to his Civil War Pension Application. The 1850 Murray Co. census shows Stephen in the household of William Carter, age 38, b.VA.; Ann E., age 26, b. TN;
John W., age 15, b. NC; Stephen G.(granddad), age 13, b. NC; Mary C., age 7, b. TN; and James M., age 20, b. NC. I'm attempting to determine if William and Ann E. are Stephen Goodson's parents or any other information about Stephen Goodson's ancestors. Stephen Goodson was in the Civil War from March 1, 1861 until paroled in Greensboro, NC on April 26, 1865, serving the entire war in the First
Georgia Regulars. He settled in Spring Place after the war and married Martha Ann Shelton, from Cleveland, Bradley Co., TN, on Oct. 25, 1868. They raised 8 children there; Fannie Elizabeth, William Shelton, Edward Henry, John Lester, Thomas Coffee,(my Dad) Robert Lee, Samuel Batless, and Sue M. Stephen Goodson was a carpenter and wagon maker and farmer. There are still many of my kin living in
Murray and Whitfield Counties. Stephen was, at one time, a Justice of the Peace in Murray Co. Stephen Goodson, Martha Ann and most of their children are buried in Spring Place Cemetery. Stephen and family are mentioned in "Murray County Heritage". William Carter was born in Va. I believe he was one of three sons born to William Carter and Mary Chester who acquired a marriage license in Fauquier Co, VA on
March 5, 1789 and were married that same day in Culpepper Co. VA, by John Pickett, a Baptist Minister. The three sons were; George, Henry and William. The 1870 Murray Co. census shows that William and Ann E., in addition to Mary C., who was 25 at that time, had other children, Samuel B. age 13 and Juda, age 1. I have no information on any of these and am seeking any info that anyone
can furnish. William was at one time a Postmaster at the Fort Mountain Station, in Murray Co. I have not been able to determine what happened to William and Ann E. and their children, other than my Dad, if, in fact, he was the son of William and Ann E. Any help or response from anyone will be very much appreciated.

Andrew Jackson COPELAND, He has been found on the 1850 Murray County Census age 25, with Elizabeth age 23 and Reuben M. age 4/12. Have not found them again until the 1880 Census in Wise County, Texas. I am assuming they are the same family, however, Reuben M. has not been found on any other censuses in Georgia or Texas. My grandfather John Marion Copeland, son of Andrew J. and Elizabeth, was born in 1855 in Ball Ground,Georgia; I do not know if it was in Murray County or Cherokee County. There were relatives in Cherokee County also. Tried researching the county changes, but have not been able to figure out if there are two Ball Grounds or if they are the same one.

Caroline/Angeline DRAKE, My great-grandmother, Caroline or Angeline Drake, was born about 1823 in North Carolina according to Census records. She was living in Murray County, GA at the time of her marriage on March 18, 1848, to Joshua Boatwright. I am very confused about the given name of this woman. In the 1850 Murray County Census there are two Joshua Boatrights counted with their families, one married to Caroline and the other married to Angeline, and each family has a one year old son named either Marcellus Chesley or Chesley. My grandfather was Marcellus Chesley Boatwright born Jan 22, 1849 in Murray County. I believe the family was counted twice. In each later Census the mother in the family is listed as Angeline. I would like to trade information with anyone who has a connection to the Drake family so that I could learn the parents of Caroline or Angeline and maybe determine her correct given name.Thank you for any help or insight you might be able to provide.

TAYLOR SMITH FAMILY I am looking for info on a Smith family that lived in Shuck Pen Township, Murray County from at least 1880. Taylor was the youngest son of James S. and Caroline and youngest sibling of Mary, Rosa, Henry, Elizabeth, George, Nancy, William and Samuel. They show up in the 1880 census and then I lose track until Taylor appears again in 1920 married to Essie with the following children Carroll, Roy, Raymond, John, Esther Lois and Fred. In the 1930 census Carroll and Roy are gone and Ray is now married to (looks like) Nammie. They are listed as having a daughter age 12, Lethia. This is not actually possible as they are only about 23. Lethia is my mother who we understand was an orphan born c. 1919. We don't know where she came from except possibly a Methodist orphanage in the Atlanta area, or when she came to live with this family or if she is possibly related to them. We know that Taylor, Essie, Roy, (his wife Ethel Leona) and Fred (his wife Mary Lee Smith) are all buried at the Center Valley United Methodist Cemetery. Further, we know that Roy and Ethel had at least one daughter, Edna, age 5 in the 1930 census. This family owned land in the area and were farmers according to the 1880, 1920 and 1930 census. Apparently, some of them stayed in the area as Fred was buried in 1990. Any information on this family would be most appreciated. Please contact me with anything, no matter how small it may seem.

William and Malinda WILLIAMS, both born in South Carolina, about 1811. They can be found in Ellijay in 1832, and William was associated with the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, in Ellijay, between Ellijay and Chatsworth. The Children lived in Murray County later. Children of William and Malinda were James Jarrard Williams B 1832, Moses; Nancy M.; Elihu E.; Edward; Rebecca J.; Tilman P. ; Lucinda; and Andrew J. born 1849. We know a lot about the James Jarrard Williams line from which we descend, but would like to know a little more about William and Malinda. Her maiden name and both of their death dates and their death location. Thanks for any help.

Edward WILSON, I would like any information I can get on Edward Wilson, born in 1827 in N. Carolina. He lived in Murray County Ga. with his wife Elizabeth and children at the time of the 1860 census. I know he was a farmer and fought in the Civil War. An Edward B. Wilson enlisted as a private in the 39th Ga. Infantry, Co. A. There was also a Samuel M. Wilson who enlisted at the same time. I wonder if they could be brothers and I wonder if this Edward is my gggrandfather. Edward also had a brother named George who was a Baptist preacher. Edward's father's name may have been William. Edward moved his family to Bell County Texas sometime in the 1870's. I noticed one of the family names listed on this site is Berry. Agranddaughter of Edward, Ella Mae Wilson b. 1890 married an Andrew D. Berry. They lived in Belton, Bell Co., Texas. It may or may not be the same Berry family. Any help would be appreciated.
